The Body and Blood of Jesus Christ Year A 2026

"I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever;

and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." ( Ga 6, 51 )

Put yourselves into the shoes of a young person making their first Holy Communion:

Today is the most amazing day of my life.

I know people say that about lots of things — birthdays, holidays, the day you score a goal or win a race. But today is different. Today is completely, wonderfully, extraordinarily different. Today, Jesus is coming to me. To me!

Think about that for just a moment. The same Jesus who made the stars and the oceans, who walked on water and raised the dead, who laughed with his friends and wept with those who were sad — that same Jesus gives himself to me, today. Not to a king. Not to a saint with a halo. To me, here, now, in this church, in this moment. How incredible is that???

In the Bible, God fed his people in the desert with bread from heaven — manna, they called it. This mysterious, miraculous food appeared each morning like a gift left on the doorstep. They were lost, hungry, and frightened. And yet God said: “I've got you….. Here — eat. I will feed you.”

That's what Jesus does today. He looks at me and at you — yes, both of us — and says: “I've got you…... Here — eat. This is me, and I am yours”.

I have to say that my heart is beating fast right now. Good. Let it. This is the kind of moment that should make all hearts race, because something enormous and wonderful and real is happening. Jesus loves me so much that he doesn't just send a message or a gift wrapped in paper. He gives himself to me. His very self. Wrapped not in paper but in bread.

St Augustine — one of the greatest thinkers of the Church — once told people: “keep walking, keep moving, keep going forward.” Don't look back. Don't stand still. And the food that keeps you walking? The Eucharist. The Body and Blood of Christ. This is your food for the journey.

And what a journey lies ahead of me.

I can hear Jesus saying that there will be hard days and brilliant days ahead, and ordinary days and extraordinary ones. There will be moments when I feel lost, like wandering in a desert of my own. But Jesus will never leave me. He promises: whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me — and I in them.

In them. In me. In you.

Today, I begin the most wonderful adventure of my life — walking with Jesus, fed by Jesus, loved by Jesus. I will go forward, bravely and joyfully and will never, ever forget this moment — the day Jesus first came to me, and made his home in my heart!
