What is the WYD?

World Youth Day (WYD) is an international gathering of young Catholics from around the world, initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985. It brings together young people for prayer, worship, cultural exchange, catechesis, and celebration of the Catholic faith with the Pope.

Held every two to three years in a different country, World Youth Day includes large public events such as opening and closing Masses, the Way of the Cross, prayer vigils, music, testimonies, and opportunities for reconciliation and service. Pilgrims also experience the culture and hospitality of the host nation while meeting young people from every continent.

For many participants, WYD is a powerful spiritual and life-changing experience that strengthens faith, builds friendships, and inspires a deeper commitment to Christ and the Church. The next edition, World Youth Day 2027, will take place in South Korea.
