“Increase our faith!” (Luke 17:5)
Faith in Jesus Christ is one of the greatest treasures of life. It is both a gift and a calling, a source of strength in times of weakness and a light when darkness envelops us. The prophet Habakkuk cried out to God, wondering how long he must endure suffering and injustice (Habakkuk 1:2-3). God’s reply was clear: “The righteous shall live by faith” (Habakkuk 2:4). Faith is not simply believing with our minds; it is trusting God with the whole of our hearts, even when life is uncertain or painful. Faith is a steady anchor that gives us the hope and courage we need to keep walking forward.
Faith in Jesus has the power to heal us in body, mind, and spirit. When we turn to him, we find peace for our anxious hearts, strength for our weary souls, and the courage to forgive when we are wronged. In Luke, the apostles pleaded, “Increase our faith!” (Luke 17:5). Jesus replied saying that even faith as small as a mustard seed has the power to move mountains. With that kind of faith, we can do what seems impossible—not because of our strength, but because Christ works in and through us.
Faith also inspires us to make healthy and loving decisions for the wellbeing of others. St Paul urged Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God” and not be ashamed to witness to Christ (2 Timothy 1:6-8). Faith awakens in us a desire to serve, to encourage, and to protect the dignity of others—regardless of nationality, culture, or religion. Faith lifts us beyond selfishness and teaches us to work for the common good, guided by the Spirit of love and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7).
What makes faith so extraordinary is that it is not only personal, but deeply communal. Through faith, we recognise our shared humanity and God’s deep love for all people. It is a force for good in the world, urging us to break down barriers of division, to act with compassion, and to build peace where there is conflict.
Faith in Jesus Christ motivates us to live boldly, to trust God’s promises, and to step forward with confidence. It heals, guides, inspires, and empowers. It teaches us that with Christ, nothing is impossible, and that even our smallest acts of faith and love can change lives. Truly, faith is life-giving—both for us and for the world around us. No wonder that it is one of our greatest treasures!
